Uppumavu made of Broken wheat (also called Dalia in Hindi) is a popular breakfast dish as it is considered filling and nutritious. I have not tried it out but I love the sweet payasam made with Broken wheat and jaggery; made it for Onam this year 👉 A bespoke Onam Sadya 🌺 Part 𝟚 and here’s the first attempt 👉 Love is Brown 🍂
My savoury dish with Broken wheat will be a salad – a Broken wheat, chicken & pomegranate salad.
The salad is very easy to assemble, but needs some advance prep work. Broken wheat needs to be soaked in water for three hours so as to shorten it’s cooking time. There is also the peanuts which needs to be roasted and halved. Cooked boneless chicken leftovers are fantastic; else a few pieces of boneless chicken need to be fried and diced. And most importantly, the pomegranate needs to be deseeded, but just a handful will be enough !

Ingredients (Serves 4):
⁕ Broken wheat – 1/2 cup
⁕ Salt to taste
⁕ Peanuts – a handful, roasted and halved
⁕ Boneless cooked chicken, diced – 1/2 cup
⁕ Pomegranate seeds – a handful
⁕ Coriander leaves – for garnishing
⁕ Lemon juice – half a lime
⁕ Olive oil – to drizzle
Method:
[1] Soak the broken wheat in water for 3 hours; wash and drain. The quantity will almost double; add 2 cups of water, a pinch of salt and cook the broken wheat till soft. By now almost all the water will be absorbed, drain any excess water. Cool and it’s ready !

[2] Roast the raw peanuts on a hot tawa; the skin will peel away or you can peel it off easily after it cools down a bit and break them into two halves. Else there are always roasted peanuts !!

[3] If you have leftover cooked boneless chicken pieces, dice them into smaller chunks. Else take a few pieces of boneless chicken and fry them in oil with salt and pepper and dice.
[4] Plate the cooked broken wheat, top it with the diced chicken pieces, sprinkle the peanuts, drizzle the lemon juice and olive oil. Last sprinkle the pomegranate seeds and garnish with the coriander leaves leaves🍃

The tangy sweet feeling when a pomegranate seed bursts in the mouth is yummy !!
By Indian standards the salad will be bland; there are no spices nor chillies for heat. So I make this salad with a dish that is spicy like a mushroom curry or a prawns ularthu 👉Prawn favourites: Adds magic to meals 🍤

Till next post, take care !!
