If I have to name one colour representing the month of March, it has to be yellow.
Yellow for summer and sun☀️; yellow for the mangoes that turn from green to gold this time of the year.
Promptly close to mid-March, a cardboard box arrives home. We were waiting for this !! The moment we hear the intercom buzz announcing the courier, we know the contents and are excited. The box is heavy as it should be😀 and it is filled with mangoes. They are not ripe yet. They have been plucked from the tree at our parents’ home in Kerala and individually packed in newspapers and couriered to Bangalore.

The Mango season has officially begun for us. It will take a few more weeks as they say till the mangoes become viral and the sweet yellow orbs are seen heaped in supermarkets and with the roadside vendors.

We are very happy feasting on the ripe mangoes alone; just to heighten the bliss, we buy vanilla ice cream – the combo of vanilla ice cream and fresh juicy mangoes are a match made in heaven. While this is a simple pleasure, I attempt something new – a savoury salad with mangoes. It turned out delicious😋.
This is a dish from Nigella Lawson – her Summer Salad with chicken and mangoes. I first saw it on TV and now it is available on Youtube. I made a few adjustments to make do with the ingredients I had on hand. I didn’t want to buy something that will see only a single use.

I will skip detailing the recipe as it can be visually enjoyed on Youtube from the domestic diva herself. I did not have fresh red chilli, so I used dried red chilli flakes. And I don’t use groundnut oil or mustard oil so made do with olive oil, all the rest of the ingredients were available and incorporated into the salad. Don’t forget the salt and lemon juice.

It is not often that I like the sweet- savoury together in a dish and in our usual meals we keep the two poles apart. But this is delicious😘 and loved it !! An absolutely delightful Nigella invention. Try it out, its good !!
Till next post, take care !!
