Sweet November

on

The post has nothing in common with the movie of the same name.

“Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, and the youngest you’ll ever be again.” by Eleanor Roosevelt is currently my favourite birthday quote.

Last week of November saw a dual birthday day in the family. One was my brother’s and my sister-in-law made the birthday cake (below). She is a self-taught baker and even finds time to accept cake orders, while holding a 9 to 5 job and two kids; passion at work !! The highlight of the cake were the macaroons on the top.

The second birthday was a close relative’s. They had a beautiful red velvet cake (below). The cake looks like a perfect heart, but there is an emptiness marked by the absence of candles. To quote my cousin’s words “Why spoil the cake with holes from burning candles and pollute it with the wax dripping from the candles? ” Such strong feelings against candles on cake !!

I didn’t get to taste either of the cakes, but the whole extended family enjoyed and feasted on the photos of theses pretty cakes and the small celebrations at the respective homes, shared via Whatsapp.

This is our second winter in Bangalore; we were complaining earlier, that it was already November and not yet cold like the previous year. But now, the mornings have become chilly, it’s slightly more difficult to pull off the comforter and get out of bed; and evenings get dark by 6:00 pm.

I call it sweet November not because of the birthday treats, but because November precedes the fabulous month of December. December has to be our favourite month of the year; the weather is cool (a huge relief from the heat), the streets and shop-fronts are adorned with colourful lights and decorations, there are holidays for schools and colleges, travel maybe on cards, get-together with the extended family; there is a lot of anticipated excitement in the air !!

And we start with some shopping for the Christmas decorations. I head to the Itsy Bitsy shop at the Phoenix Market City Mall and yes, they are packed with Christmassy stuff.

The Poinsettia were on sale at the mall and their red colour is a beautiful representation of the season !!
