The most well known symbol of the Onam celebrations in Kerala is the Flower carpet called Pookalam in Malayalam. Onam is the harvest festival in Kerala.

The celebrations are not confined within the borders of the state. Though families make it a point to travel home to celebrate Onam; the Malayalee diaspora across the world come together in the respective countries to celebrate this festival. The ladies are dressed for this special occasion in the traditional Kerala saris, coloured off-white with a gold border. But there are no celebrations this year on account of the devastating floods. We will make up for it next year!
